The Six-Day Superfood Challenge

Today I had 20 pieces of sushi and a few fork-fulls of chow mein for lunch, KFC chicken (with chips) for dinner and my favourite chocolate bar, a Kit Kat, for dessert. That’s way -- way, way, way -- more than my 6 800-kilojoule limit. Oh, the guilt.

I console myself a little  in the fact that my friend ate 65 pieces of sushi (that has to be some kind of record, right?). Anyway, I’ve been very much off track over the last couple of weeks. I’ve exercised less frequently and I’ve often eaten over my calorie limit.

The result is that I’ve picked up an entire kilogram, putting me at 94.3kgs. This is the first time I’ve picked up weight since I started this health programme and I’ve realised: it’s an awful feeling knowing you’ve undone something that you put so much effort into. I’ve also come down with a mild case of the sniffles, adding to my frustrations.

So, I’ve decided to do something about it; something to clean out my system, get me motivated and leave me feeling revitalised. It’s an eating programme of my own design called The Six-day Superfood Challenge.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be six days long, but the point of it is for there to be at least one “superfood” in every meal I eat. As health fundis will know, a superfood is a food with a high nutrient content that is believed to be particularly beneficial to your health. The most well-known examples of superfoods are blueberries, salmon and leafy greens, such as spinach.

Unfortunately, the saddest part of this eating programme is that I will have to cut out all the usual luxuries I usually squeeze into calorie-counting programme. Kit-Kats, crisps and even milk in my tea. Funny, I think the no-milk-in-my-tea thing is going to be harder than banishing sweets.

I will update you everyday of the six-day challenge, the first day of which starts tomorrow. I will let you know what I’ve eaten and the health benefits of these foods. And, at the end of it all, I will let you know if I’ve shed that extra kilo -- and if I see any other differences.

Salmon. Which reminds me, are you still trying to get over the 65 pieces of sushi?  I am!
These blueberries look delicious.

Spinach. Very underrated.
